Teaching Students About World War II - How is it taught in Russia?
Teaching Students About World War II - How is it taught in Russia?
At a half-hour long, and a little dry in its presentation, teachers may find it difficult to share this video with students who are more attracted to feature films or "crash course" paced videos. yet, this video exposes students to a different version of the history of World War II. Although US History students would benefit, World Studies students need this perspective to understand World War II on a global scale.

The March Toward World War II: The March of Time as Documentary and Propaganda
The March Toward World War II: The March of Time as Documentary and Propaganda
The March of Time is a newsreel series that was shown in movie theaters from 1935 to 1951. Part drama, part journalism, the radio show and newsreel, with its synergistic relationship with Life magazine, may have had unprecedented influence over its audience. The newsreel presented its makers' partly objective, pro-Americanist point of view in the documentary tradition established during the 1930s

Millions of US servicemen and women experienced this culture shock when they were stationed overseas during World War II. To assist in making the transition easier, the United States military issued pocket guides, which taught soldiers about the customs, geography, language and other cultural details of each country from The National WWII Museum

World War II in Color: The Italian Campaign and the Road to Rome | LIFE.com
As much as the pictures alone show students the brutality and destruction of war, the fact that the pictures are in color gives students an immediacy of connection with them. As we live our lives in "living color" seeing these pictures helps one understand that those people of the past whose live we study in history lived through their own lives in the present also and "in living color".

World War II in Photos - The Atlantic
World War II in Photos - The Atlantic

Why not have students review these photos and tie them to themes you provide or have them generate their own themes? Have them choose just 10 from the 900 and explain why their subset best exemplifies the war.

This series of entries was published weekly on TheAtlantic.com from June 19 through October 30, 2011, running every Sunday morning for 20 weeks. In this collection of 900 photos spread over 20 essays, I tried to explore the events of the war, the lives of the people fighting at the front and working back home, and the effects of the trauma on everyday activity.

When Dr. Seuss Took On Adolf Hitler - The Atlantic
Students with fond memories of every March 2 between Kindergarten and 4th grade will be intrigued to see this side of Dr. Suess. Teachers can easily include these in their presentations or for analysis as instructional material. It might even be worthwhile including these cartoons without mentioning their author to see if students make the connection first.

Do you have change for a billion? The mad world of Zimbabwe’s currency | World Economic Forum
Teachers explaining the Weimar Republic's failure or even the silverites of late 19th century US history can use this material in the course of an inflation lesson. Yet hidden in this article is an interesting fact that has probably been misstated by countless high school history teachers. How many teachers claim that the worst inflation in recorded history occurred in Germany - here that crown goes to post WWII Hungary.

Written just before his death, Adolph Hitler's final testament can be used by teachers to specifically how Hitler lies. Students are much better served by immersing themselves in historical evidence rather than general statements or secondary readings. Who does Hitler blame for the war? How? What does he save for his final admonition?

Choices that Define Us | Facing History and Ourselves
Choices that Define Us | Facing History and Ourselves
A graduation speech from the Dean of Yale Law School in 1988 in which he told four stories about individuals who made choices during World War II reveal the complexity of human behavior and suggest how difficult it can be to make sweeping judgments about good and evil. This short reading, with accompanying questions can be used to set up a "ethics in wartime lesson" or other lesson that explores the complexity of human choice
