Berea College v. Kentucky (1908)
Can a private college in Kentucky accept both white and black students? The state of Kentucky said "No", and the Supreme Court upheld that law. In this decision, the Supreme Court upheld a Kentucky law entitled "An Act to Prohibit White and Colored Persons from Attending the Same School". Although Plessy v Ferguson gets most of the attention, this case also serves well to give students a better appreciation of the nature of discrimination before the modern Civil Rights movement.

These panoramas offer an overview of the nation, its enterprises and its interests, with a focus on the start of the twentieth century when the panoramic photo format was at the height of its popularity. Subject strengths include: agricultural life; beauty contests; disasters; engineering work such as bridges, canals and dams; fairs and expositions; military and naval activities, especially during World War I; the oil industry; schools and college campuses, sports, and transportation. The images date from 1851 to 1991

They are a subset of the Library's larger collection donated by Carrie Chapman Catt, longtime president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, in November of 1938.
